LED billboards

LED billboards

An LED billboard is a full colour outdoor LED screen that advertises to passing traffic, with ads you change from a computer instead of pasting up new paper. We design and build LED billboards and digital billboard signs at our workshop in Welshpool, Perth, made for the Australian sun, and our own team installs them anywhere in Australia.

Who builds an LED billboard

People build LED billboards for different reasons, and the reason shapes the size, the spot and the software set-up:

Landowners with road frontage

Rent out screen time to local businesses, with each ad playing in turn.

Venues

Pubs, clubs and shopping centres that show their own events and rent out the rest of the loop.

Councils and shires

Community notices, events and road closures, with room for local advertisers if you want it.

Businesses

Your own products and opening hours in front of passing traffic, day and night.

Built for the sun

Outdoor LED screens made for Australian sun

Our LED billboards use the FA2 outdoor series, the screen we build for business signs and billboards:

  • Up to 10,000 nits bright, so photos and video stay clear in direct sun
  • Sealed to IP68 against dust and heavy rain
  • Fanless, and runs without air conditioning up to 55 degrees
  • Pixel pitches from P3.9 to P10
  • Every part serviced from the front, so nobody needs to get behind the screen

For very large screens, FA2 Max panels are light aluminium and join into big screens, weatherproof and with front access. Brochures for both are on Brochures and guides.

Single or double-sided

A single-sided billboard faces one direction of traffic. A double-sided billboard has a screen on each face, so traffic from both directions sees an ad. Each side can show its own content and run its own schedule, for example to suit the morning rush one way and the drive home the other. If you rent out screen time, two faces give you twice as many spots to fill.

Size and pixel pitch for road viewing

Size depends on how far away people read the screen and how fast they pass. Pixel pitch is the gap between the lights, in millimetres. As a rough rule, the pitch in millimetres is about the distance in metres from which the picture looks smooth, so a P10 screen looks smooth from about 10 metres. That is why P10 suits roadside signs that drivers read from a distance, while a screen people walk past needs a smaller pitch.

The number of pixels across a screen is its width divided by the pitch, so a 5 x 4 m screen at P10 has 500 x 400 pixels. Try sizes and pitches on the pixel pitch planner, read pixel pitch explained, or send us a photo of the site and we will suggest a size.

Software

Running it: every advertiser on a schedule

You run an LED billboard from a computer or online, so changing an ad never means a trip up a ladder. NovaStar screens use ViPlex Express on a computer or VNNOX online, and HD screens use LED-Cloud online. Load each advertiser’s ad, set the order and the screen plays them in a loop. When an advertiser sends a new ad, you swap it in from your desk.

Schedule by time of day, so a cafe’s breakfast ad plays in the morning and a pub’s band night ad plays after 5 pm. We set up the software and show you how it works. Step by step guides for each program are on Brochures and guides, and the programs themselves are on our Downloads page.

Approvals

An LED billboard usually needs approval before it goes up, and the rules depend on the state:

  • Western Australia: council approval, and signs near main roads may also need Main Roads WA
  • New South Wales: fixed signs can need consent from the council under the state’s advertising and signage rules
  • Victoria: most electronic and illuminated signs need a planning permit under the council’s planning scheme
  • Queensland: Brisbane City Council and other Queensland councils control signs through their local laws, so many fixed and digital signs need a permit
  • South Australia: signs are assessed under the Planning and Design Code, so a fixed digital sign usually needs development approval through PlanSA

We help with the application at no extra cost, in WA and interstate. Read our guide to council approval for LED signs.

    We build it in Welshpool

Every screen is built and tested at our workshop.

  4. 04

    Our own team installs it

In Perth, regional WA or interstate.

  5. 05

We show you how to run it

We set up the software and train whoever will load the ads.

In Melbourne, we designed and installed full colour LED message boards for the Newbay Hotel as part of its facade upgrade. Closer to home, see the full colour LED screens and video walls and outdoor LED signs and pylon signs we build in Perth.

Finance and warranty

Finance through Ledge Finance spreads the cost of the screen. Warranties run from 1 to 5 years, depending on the product.
